Los Angeles (May 13, 2024) – Last Friday, May 10, 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom released his May Revision of the state’s 2024-25 budget that proposes to eliminate the Children’s Holistic Immigration Representation Project (CHIRP) a program that provides universal and holistic legal representation to unaccompanied immigrant children.
The Immigrant Defenders Law Center (ImmDef) issued the following statement regarding the governor’s budget proposal:
“ImmDef is extremely disheartened and disappointed to hear of the proposed elimination of the Children's Holistic Immigration Representation Program from the governor's budget. Thanks to CHIRP, ImmDef is able to provide lifesaving, holistic representation and social work services to dozens of vulnerable children who would have otherwise gone unserved. ImmDef Children's Representation Project Legal Services Director Marion ("Mickey") Donovan-Kaloust said, "Now is not the time for California to be turning its back on immigrant children and families. I have seen first-hand the incredible difference our CHIRP-funded legal and social services have made in the lives of our child clients, and I am devastated to learn that the Governor intends to rip the rug out from under them."
