Largest deportation defense nonprofit law firm in California calls for the era of accountability to begin
Los Angeles, CA - Lindsay Toczylowski, President, CEO, and co-founder of Immigrant Defenders Law Center (ImmDef) released the following statement on the heels of the historic 2026 midterm election results.
"Last night, the American people decisively rejected the politics of fear, cruelty, and authoritarianism. The electorate rebuffed the lie that immigrants are to blame for our country's problems, the cruel policies that tear families apart, and the state-sanctioned terror committed against our communities in order to fulfill mass deportation quotas.
Americans are demanding courage to take down authoritarianism. They are calling on leaders to fight for their neighbors, protect our freedoms, defend our democracy, and build an economy that works for everyone.
This was not a narrow victory. It was a political reckoning powered by Latino voters, young voters, Black voters, Asian Americans, rural voters, suburban voters, Indigenous voters, working families, farmers, and countless people who refused to accept the politics of fear and division that has been pitting neighbor against neighbor and tearing this country apart.
The message voters sent is simple: if you're more willing to bend the knee to Trump's politics of hate than to stand up for the Constitution, for due process, and for the fundamental rights of every person living and working in this country, then We the People will remove you from office.
But the work of holding elected officials to account does not stop at the ballot box. If those elected to serve the people refuse to rein in DHS, ICE, and CBP, they should expect the same judgment voters delivered to the politicians who lost last night.
To the newly elected, understand this: Americans did not send you to Washington to be cautious. They sent you there to match their outrage with action. You were elected to restore democratic norms, defend fundamental rights, and repair the damage our now lame-duck president caused. Even as you celebrate, unaccompanied children are still being forced to represent themselves in immigration court, navigating alone a system designed to fail them. Over 65,000 immigrants remain imprisoned in abhorrent conditions, separated from their families and communities. People are still being removed to third-countries where they have no ties and asylum seekers are being sent back into the very dangers they initially fled. This cruelty must end.
The task now before all of us is not only to reimagine the type of America we all deserve, but also to hold accountable those who abused their power, violated the law, and used the power of the federal government to advance a political agenda rooted in hostility and heartlessness. Let's get to work"
