Elizer’s first thoughts after realizing he was being detained by ICE on his way to work were of his children and his wife. He continued thinking of them while imprisoned at Adelanto ICE Prison where he was stripped not only from his family but from his dignity and denied even the most basic hygiene products that every person deserves. For two months, he held onto hope that he would soon return home. That day finally came thanks to ImmDef’s dedicated legal team and the support of the Detained Immigrant Bond Fund.

Thanks to compassionate donors, Elizer had representation for his bond hearing free of charge, and was able to post his bond. Elizer is just one of the many people who have been helped by the Detained Immigrant Bond Fund. Every contribution is more than a dollar amount; it’s a hand reaching through the cruelty of immigration system to reunite families. The fund urgently needs replenishing so we can continue bringing home people who have been granted release.

The Fifth Amendment guarantees due process to every person on U.S. soil—not just citizens, not just those entered with documentation, but every human being. That means no one can be seized without cause and deported within days without the chance to speak to an attorney, understand their rights, or let alone be found within ICE's own systems. But our attorneys have seen this happen as recently as last week. Allegedly Tom Lyons, acting director of ICE, said back in April 2025 that ICE needs to operate “like a business… like [Amazon] Prime, but with human beings.” But the Constitution is not a commodity and cannot be twisted to justify a cruel vision for immigration enforcement at the expense of dignity and due process for all.

Defending children in government custody!

Children should not have to sue in federal court to have their voices heard and their rights respected, but as the government continues to detain children for long periods without explanation, ImmDef has answered the call. In the past two months, our Litigation & Advocacy team alongside our Children’s Representation Program has filed three habeas petitions in Federal District Court on behalf of a total of eleven children facing prolonged detention in ORR custody. In response, the government released all eleven children to their families - with a final child reunited with her mother and siblings after 278 days, welcomed at the airport with open arms and balloons before finally going home together!

The prolonged detention and separation of children from their loving families brings back ugly memories of the Zero Tolerance days that shocked the nation's conscience. It also violates children's rights under the law.

ImmDef stands with children and families and will keep fighting until justice is not the exception, but the standard.

Applying for Asylum in the United States? Here is important information.

As of July 2025, USCIS and EOIR implemented new fees for asylum applications, including an initial filing fee as well as an annual fee for pending asylum cases. This is a major change for those applying for asylum or have a pending case. Failure to pay can result in your application being considered abandoned and may even impact your immigration court case.

⚠️Here are some important reminders:
✅ Payments are electronic only (no cash, checks, or money orders).
✅ Do not submit payments twice.
✅ Download, print, and save your receipt with your A-Number and tracking ID.
✅ Pay only after receiving official notice, if required.

If you are filing affirmative asylum but have no current court case, payments are made through the USCIS online payment system.

Leonela’s case marks a devastating new low for ICE and their unlawful enforcement patterns. ICE told our legal team she was never processed, yet two days later she was suddenly in Nicaragua, after she was likely pressured into signing deportation papers she did not want and could not meaningfully consent to without access to an attorney.

Leonela is eight months pregnant, entitled under federal law and ICE’s own detention standards to heightened medical care, legal access, and protection from coercion. These rapid removals, carried out without transparency or proper documentation, leave families frantically searching for loved ones while the government denies having them in custody. This is not a procedural error, this is the circumvention of due process for the sake of a cruel deportation agenda.

That they did this while a lawyer and two members of Congress were physically searching for her is a level of defiance toward both the law and congressional oversight that should shock the conscience.

ICE’s violence doesn’t stop at the moment of arrest; it simply disappears from public view and continues inside ICE prisons, or in our client Julio's case - continues while he was handcuffed to a hospital bed. Julio was returning home after his regular dialysis appointment when ICE agents surrounded him and pulled him to the ground. Our legal team was alerted and Managing Attorney Viridiana Chabolla immediately went to visit him in the DTLA ICE prison where he was held in a basement and denied medically appropriate diet. His family - all U.S. citizens including his eldest son who is a military serviceperson - came immediately to meet Viridiana and advocate for his immediate release. ICE agents refused to release him, despite the fact that he needs dialysis several times a week to manage his end-stage kidney failure. Julio feared he would die in immigration custody.

Julio was taken to Adelanto ICE prison where his health plummeted from the inhumane conditions, and he was admitted to a hospital where he remained under 24/7 ICE surveillance for weeks. Neither ICE nor the hospital provided any information about his condition or location, leaving his attorney and family completely in the dark. Julio was stuck in a legal black hole; a reality countless detained immigrants face when they experience medical crises or suffer violent arrests that require urgent care. After repeated attempts to file paperwork for his release, Viridiana finally received a call from �ICE saying he would be released from custody. But after Julio's family drove three hours to the hospital - he was anything but free. Instead he lay there shackled, unconscious, and fighting for his life. ICE and the hospital never told his family or lawyer that he had a severe stroke and was intubated. �After he was well enough to be released from the hospital, Julio returned home, but continues to struggle with his health �while Viridiana continues to advocate for his right to remain with his family as his immigration case moves forward.

Adelanto is not just a "detention center" it's an ICE prison. It is a place where federal agents attempt to strip away the dignity of the humans they imprison. Adelanto ICE prison is notorious for inhumane conditions including inadequate or denied medical care, refusing disability accommodations, withholding cleaning services, providing moldy and expired food, forcing detained people to pay for their own soap, and non-potable water.

This is unlawful neglect. No one deserves to suffer while their immigration case continues.

This facility isn’t meant to hold people, it’s meant to break them.

Our legal team has seen firsthand the conditions inside the Adelanto ICE Processing Center - mold, disease, medical neglect, and inadequate food and water. In just one year, the population surged from three people to nearly 2,000, and two people have died since October.

A father, teammate, and community member is home again after being forcibly taken by ICE on his way to work. ❤️

“Being back at home with my kids has given me peace,” our client Daniel shared. “Spending time with them makes me feel stable again.” His youngest child now rarely leaves his side. Daniel says being present for the everyday moments like caring for his children, going on walks, and playing together, has helped his family feel whole again.

Returning home has also meant returning to the soccer field. “For a while, I forgot about everything,” he said of his first game back. “I just enjoyed playing again.” Soccer has long been part of his life and remains a source of connection and normalcy as he continues to move forward.

“Daniel is a devoted father with deep ties to his family and community,” said ImmDef Managing Attorney Mr. Borkowski. He championed his client's reunification with both his family and the soccer field by filing various forms of relief including federal litigation. We’re grateful to our pro bono partners at Gibson Dunn for their critical support in securing Daniel’s release. “Cases like his show why it’s critical to fight for release. People should not be detained when they pose no danger and have everything to gain by being home with their children.”

ICE’s abuse of immigrants doesn’t stop at the moment of arrest; it escalates inside detention centers across the country. That’s why we, alongside @chirla and @public_counsel, sued DHS to force immediate and meaningful improvements to conditions at the Adelanto ICE Prison.

When Trump took office and raids swept across Southern California, Adelanto’s population didn’t just grow, it exploded from three people to more than 2,000. That overnight surge created a humanitarian crisis. Our clients are trapped in conditions no human being should endure: nonexistent medical care, mold-infested walls and food, contaminated water, and blatant, systemic neglect by ICE agents. People with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and life‑threatening medical needs are abandoned. Their health deteriorates and their suffering is ignored. If this were a school, a hospital, or any other building it would be shut down.

We filed L.T. v ICE because the Constitution doesn't take a break behind ICE prison doors. We will continue fighting in court until DHS is forced to provide humane, safe conditions for every person in its custody.

The Constitution doesn’t clock out behind ICE prison doors, that’s why we’re suing the federal government alongside @public_counsel and @chirla in L.T. v ICE. This lawsuit challenges the unconstitutional and inhumane conditions at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center. It seeks to hold government agencies and private contractors accountable, establish enforceable protections, and ensure that detention complies with constitutional standards and basic human dignity. These conditions aren’t accidents; they’re the predictable result of a system built to break people down and force them to abandon their rights.

But no one — regardless of immigration status — should be subjected to life‑threatening conditions in government custody. And we won’t stop fighting until this system is held accountable.

Through this lawsuit, we demand that ICE:

- Improve medical care standards,
- Guarantee adequate nutrition and sanitary conditions,
- End excessive use of solitary confinement,
- Ensure transparency in detention operations, and
- Establish independent oversight to prevent future human rights violations.

Right now, families across the country are facing indefinite separation because the Trump administration has changed bond policies that keep families apart. But the Detained Immigrant Bond Fund, founded by @cluejustice, reunites families and brings people back home.

Our attorneys are inside Adelanto ICE prison meeting with detained community members, documenting medical neglect, and fighting for their release. People imprisoned inside ICE detention centers are being held in freezing rooms without basic hygiene, cut off from lawyers and family, and transferred without warning. And families on the outside are forced to come up with $15,000–$20,000 just to get their loved one out to continue their immigration case from home. That’s not a “bond,” it’s a financial barrier designed to keep people locked up.

All of this is happening as deaths in ICE custody continue to rise nationwide. Thirty two people died last year, the highest number in two decades, and at least six more have already died in 2026.

We’re not looking away. We’ll keep showing up, documenting the harm, challenging these abuses in court, and raising bond funds to reunite families, because people’s lives depend on it.

The entire ImmDef team is shocked and horrified by reports of a community member being shot and killed in Minneapolis today during an encounter involving the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This loss of life is devastating, and our hearts are with the family and community affected by this senseless tragedy.

Our statement:

“The brutal murder of this young mother in Minneapolis is the latest devastating reminder of the chaos and danger unleashed when ICE is allowed to act with impunity. There is no public‑safety justification for armed agents to terrorize communities and point guns at civilians. As in Los Angeles and Chicago before, DHS immediately blasted out a prepackaged, blame‑the‑victim narrative before any independent investigation, gaslighting the public with a story that blatantly contradicts what people can see with their own eyes. We have warned that Secretary Noem and Stephen Miller’s policies make tragedies like today’s not just possible, but predictable. The growing militarization of immigration enforcement and the escalation of armed operations in our neighborhoods have made our communities less safe, violated fundamental constitutional rights, and inflicted widespread fear and trauma. This must be brought to an end immediately. Congress must block any additional funding for ICE’s hateful agenda and ensure the agency is constrained by the Constitution. The entire Trump administration must face consequences for the harm their policies have inflicted on immigrant communities and on this nation as a whole.”

#2025RECAP This year we stayed rooted in empowering our community.

We expanded Know Your Rights trainings and conducted nearly 500 of them this year alone, created a free hub for legal resources (immdef.org/resources), and hosted virtual asylum clinics to give people trusted advice in the safety of their home. Through rapid response, we provided limited and full-scope representation, provided resources to clients impacted by fires, and fielded thousands of phone calls through our hotline.

We documented detention conditions, filed complaints, stood with families at protests, and uplifted the stories of those impacted by raids, including our clients Andry and Vicente, whose disappearances show why this work cannot slow down.

This year reminded us that community defense is collective, because the rights of one impact the rights of all.

#RECAP2025 This year, we put unprecedented pressure on elected officials and pushed the federal government to uphold the constitutional rights of all people. Our Litigation and Advocacy team challenged unlawful immigration enforcement through impact litigation, emergency filings, and countless habeas petitions.

We advanced major cases with partner organizations, including Vazquez Perdomo v. Noem, challenging unlawful raids and racial profiling across Southern California while protecting access to counsel; CLSEPA v. HHS, a nationwide lawsuit to restore legal representation for unaccompanied children unlawfully stripped of counsel; and an asylum mandamus to compel action for long-delayed protection claims. We also secured critical remedies in ImmDef v. DHS, reaffirming the fundamental statutory and constitutional rights of children.

We showed up across the country from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles and beyond for Congressional hearings, shed light on the damage caused by the Alien Enemies Act after the administration disappeared our client Andy and more than 250 Venezuelan men to CECOT, and exposed the cruelty of ICE enforcement, raids, and detention abuses.

We did all this simply because every immigrant deserves a champion in their corner, and that’s why this work matters.

2025 demanded speed, flexibility, and resolve, and our team of zealous legal advocates met it head-on.

When immigration policies shifted and enforcement escalated early in the year, we adapted our strategy in real time. Our Rapid Response program became a trusted resource for our region, answering urgent calls, coordinating with local and state-wide partners, and supporting our communities as they’re loved ones were targeted and detained.

As detention has hit record highs and conditions worsened, we shifted resources, sent teams where they were needed most, and changed how we showed up inside detention centers. We focused on ensuring people did not disappear into the immigration system without legal support or connection to their families.

This was a year that required us to move fast and to stay grounded in our commitment to due process and community defense.

We are relieved to share that Benjamin Guerrero Cruz, an 18‑year‑old LAUSD student and loving son, is finally home for the holidays after our legal team fought for his release from Adelanto ICE prison. His freedom is the result of our relentless advocacy and a community that refused to let his story be forgotten.

Many people feel powerless in the face of our immigration system. Ben’s community proved the opposite. They proved that hope and collective action are a shield against injustice. Hope carried Ben through nearly four months in detention, and it mobilized teachers, neighbors, and friends who visited him, supported his family, and even walked the dog he was caring for the morning ICE took him before his senior year began.

Now that he's released, Ben’s wish is simple: to live without fear, continue his asylum case in peace, and finish high school like any other teenager. His return home reminds us that none of us are “just one person.” When we show up for one another, we create the conditions for justice, and we make it possible for young people like Ben to have a fighting change in a cruel immigration system.

This flyer marks the place where our client Vicente was taken by ICE agents 76 days ago. This holiday season, many families are missing someone at the holiday dinner table because of cruel ICE tactics. Vicente Ventura Aguilar is one of them.

In October, video footage confirms Vicente was taken from his neighborhood by federal immigration agents in South Los Angeles. Since that day, his family has not heard from him. Despite eyewitness accounts that he suffered a medical emergency in custody, the government says they never detained him that day. His family deserves transparency and accountability, not a disappeared loved one.

As families across the country pack their bags and board flights home for the holidays, Julio César Peña’s son, an active‑duty service member, rushed home for a very different reason: his father had been detained by ICE.

Our client Julio is living with end‑stage kidney failure that has already caused a heart attack and stroke at just 43 years old. ICE detention is deadly for someone as medically vulnerable as Julio, yet instead of releasing him to pursue his immigration case with his normal care team and family by his side, ICE is keeping him handcuffed to a hospital bed with an agent stationed in his room at all times.

His son shared with @drnoriega on @MSNownews, that the last thing his father told him was, ‘Help me get out of here, or I’m going to die in here."

On #InternationalMigrantsDay, we call out the cruelty too many families endure: loved ones torn away by immigration enforcement, left with no answers about where they are, or how to bring them home.

Chief Program Officer, Yliana Johansen-Méndez, spoke to @lapublicpress about the massive amount of calls we receive from concerned loved ones through our hotline. Out of the 2,000 individuals we've tracked, the locations of nearly 20% of those people remains unknown. Yliana shared, “It is really hard to find information on them. We know they were taken by ICE, but we don’t know which facility they’ve been taken to." Our Rapid Response Hotline is a lifeline, especially during the holidays, helping families locate missing loved ones, connect to trusted legal support, and fight for their release and reunification.

Since October, unaccompanied children have remained in federal custody without explanation - even after clearing the process to be reunited with family members here in the U.S.

In an interview with NPR’s All Things Considered @npratc, ImmDef Legal Services Director Marion “Mickey” Donovan-Kaloust explained that reunifications have largely stopped, leaving children in prolonged detention, desperate and confused about why they cannot be with the families who are waiting for them.
