DETAINED YOUTH EMPOWERMENT PROJECT

Immigrant Defenders Law Center attorney works with a young client.

ImmDef’s Detained Youth Empowerment Project (DYEP) is an innovative program that provides Know Your Rights classes and legal screenings to over 1000 children in shelters run by the Office of Refugee Resettlement in greater Los Angeles.

Many of these children have taken dangerous journeys from their home countries, alone, to escape gang violence, abuse and persecution. They often endure hunger, cold, physical and/or sexual abuse during their passage, all in the hope of finding safety and security in the United States.

ImmDef’s DYEP team travels weekly to each shelter and uses popular education techniques to empower minors facing deportation to understand the basics of the U.S. immigration court process.
