Paralegal Coordinator

In order to increase access to justice for people facing immigration court, ImmDef is currently hiring additional legal and administrative staff.


The Immigrant Defenders Law Center (“ImmDef”) is a next-generation, social justice law firm that provides high-quality representation and legal services to immigrants in Southern California. Reporting to the Support Services Manager , the Paralegal Coordinator supervises a team of paralegals supporting a variety of ImmDef programs while also maintaining a reduced workload providing direct paralegal assistance. 


Essential Functions

Coordinator Duties:

  1. Provide direct supervision to team of paralegals with duties including, but not limited to, assuring quality work product, mentoring, managing workflows, providing backup support and coverage and identifying and addressing personnel and/or performance issues.

  2. Collaborate with managers and attorneys to further develop legal support skills within the paralegal team, including technical skills, research, writing, administrative duties, preparing and assembling USCIS, EOIR, and CA Superior Court filings, and other skills necessary to advance the organization’s legal practice;

  3. Create materials, memos, templates and manuals to further develop the quality of legal support provided by ImmDef paralegals;

  4. Participate in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training and onboarding of new Paralegals;

  5. Review and approve timesheets, monitor attendance and review time-off requests;

  6. Monitor staffing of paralegals to ensure coverage at all times and even distribution of workloads;

  7. Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with all direct reports staff and conduct annual performance reviews;

  8. Provide direct paralegal support as needed.

  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to various competing demands, and demonstrate the highest level of client service and response.


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Preferred 2+ years of supervisory experience;

  • Preferred 2+ years of Legal Assistant or Paralegal experience;

  • Paralegal Certificate or at least one year working under the close supervision of an attorney required;

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work under pressure;

  • Enthusiasm for working at a fast-paced, dynamic organization;

  • Passion for social justice for immigrants required

Supervisory Responsibility

This position supervises a team of 4-6 paralegals.

Classification and Work Schedule

This is a full-time, exempt position. Work schedule will be Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexibility required based on the needs of the organization.


Work Environment and Physical Demands

This job operates in a professional office environment. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary. 



No travel is expected for this position.

Salary & Benefits


  • $49,000 - $53,000 DOE

Holidays and Paid Time Off

  • 12 paid holidays including Indigenous Peoples’ Day

  • 1-Week paid winter break between Christmas and New Years

  • 15 vacation days per year

  • 12 Sick Days per year

  • ImmDef offers a number of health plans that are 100% paid plans for staff starting on the 1st of the month following 30 days of employment.

  • Additionally, we pay 75% of the premiums for select plans for immediate family members, including registered domestic partners.


FSA and Dependent Care FSA

  • ImmDef offers FSA plans to help offset the costs of eligible health care expenses for you, your spouse, and your eligible dependents using pre-tax dollars

  • We also offer Dependent Care FSA to pay for eligible dependent care services, such as preschool, summer day camp, before or after school programs, and child or adult daycare.


401(k) Retirement Savings Plan

  • ImmDef staff are eligible to enroll in our 401(k) plans immediately upon hire, contributing pre-tax dollars towards their retirement goals

  • After six months on staff, ImmDef will match 100% of contributions up to 3%

  • Funds are vested immediately!


Public Service Loan Forgiveness

  • As a 501(c)3, qualified ImmDef staff are eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Parking and Travel Stipend

  • ImmDef Staff commuting into our DTLA office are eligible for reimbursement of parking or public transit costs up to $90 per month.
