Managing Attorney

In order to increase access to justice for people facing immigration court, ImmDef is currently hiring additional legal and administrative staff.

The Immigrant Defenders Law Center (“ImmDef”) is a next-generation, social justice law firm that provides high-quality representation and legal services to immigrants in Southern California. ImmDef was founded with the belief that no immigrant should be forced to go into court alone and our universal representation programs for children and adults are a first step towards that goal. ImmDef seeks a full-time Managing Attorney. As a member of ImmDef’s management team, the Managing Attorney will have the opportunity to help develop and advance our mission-driven organization.

 

Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Mentor, supervise and provide support for a team of staff attorneys representing detained and recently released adults in their immigration removal proceedings;

  • Provide fearless and zealous representation to clients on their own reduced caseload of deportation defense cases;

  • Lead case review sessions and work collaboratively with staff to develop case strategies and litigation tactics;

  • Work to develop and implement policies and procedures that increase effectiveness and efficiency within our representation work;

  • Provide guidance to staff attorneys to work as part of a team and in furtherance of the mission of the organization;

  • Other duties as assigned by ImmDef’s leadership team.  

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate degree;

  • Spanish language proficiency required (will be tested at time of interview);

  • Active, California State Bar License, or license from another jurisdiction and (for some positions) commitment to “waiving in” to the CA Bar via the Multi-Jurisdictional Practice Program;

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in the practice of law, with at least 2 years of immigration removal defense specific experience; Experience working with adult clients with psychiatric disorders a plus

  • Experience managing, teaching and mentoring staff and/or interns is important;

  • Knowledge of issues facing detained immigrants and their families, and experience representing detained immigrants is a huge plus;

  • Experience as a public defender and/or with cases at the cross-section of criminal law and immigration law is helpful;

  • Strong case management, legal research, and legal writing skills required;

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to zealously pursue new and untested legal theories;

  • Ability to work collaboratively and to handle multiple demands in a sometimes hectic and busy environment;

  • Passion for social justice for immigrants required.

Classification and Work Schedule

This is a full-time, exempt position. Work schedule will be Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with flexibility required based on the needs of the organization.

 

Work Environment and Physical Demands

This job operates in a professional office environment. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary. 

Travel

Travel to Southern California area detention centers will be required.

Salary and Benefits

Salary

  • Starting at $70,000 annually DOE

Holidays and Paid Time Off

  • 12 paid holidays including Indigenous Peoples’ Day

  • 1-Week paid winter break between Christmas and New Years

  • 15 vacation days per year

  • 12 Sick Days per year

 

Health, Dental and Vision Insurance

  • ImmDef offers a number of health plans that are 100% paid plans for staff starting on the 1st of the month following 30 days of employment.

  • Additionally, we pay 75% of the premiums for select plans for immediate family members, including registered domestic partners.

 

FSA and Dependent Care FSA

  • ImmDef offers FSA plans to help offset the costs of eligible health care expenses for you, your spouse, and your eligible dependents using pre-tax dollars

  • We also offer Dependent Care FSA to pay for eligible dependent care services, such as preschool, summer day camp, before or after school programs, and child or adult daycare.

 

401(k) Retirement Savings Plan

  • ImmDef staff are eligible to enroll in our 401(k) plans immediately upon hire, contributing pre-tax dollars towards their retirement goals

  • After six months on staff, ImmDef will match 100% of contributions up to 3%

  • Funds are vested immediately!

 

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

  • As a 501(c)3, qualified ImmDef staff are eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness

 

Bar Dues

  • ImmDef covers California Bar Dues up to $450 annually

 

Parking and Travel Stipend

  • ImmDef Staff commuting into our DTLA office are eligible for reimbursement of parking or public transit costs up to $90 per month.
